‘From the Emancipation Proclamation to the 13th Amendment’

“From the Emancipation Proclamation to the 13th Amendment,” a lecture and discussion featuring author, journalist and historian Lerone Bennett Jr. and Corey Capers, UIC assistant professor of African American studies and history.

The program at the DuSable Museum of African American History will include an in-depth discussion of the political and moral debates concerning the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, and their aftermath.

Bennett has written extensively on African American history. His honors include the Literature Award of the Academy of Arts and Letters, the Book of the Year Award from Capital Press Club and the Patron Saints Award from the Society of Midland Authors.

Capers teaches Colonial American, U.S. and African American history from the 17th century to the U.S. Civil War, with a particular emphasis on the intersections of the practice of race, gender, nationalism, popular culture and religion during the American Revolution and Early American Republic.
