Cuba’s Effort to Combat Climate Change

Please join the UIC School of Public Health Global Health Program, the Department of International Studies at Indiana University, and the UIC-University of Chicago Center for Health and Environment for a special seminar with Helen Yaffe. Yaffe will be discussing “Cuba’s Efforts to Combat Climate Change.”

Helen Yaffe is a senior lecturer in economic and social history at the University of Glasgow and a visiting fellow at the Latin America and Caribbean Centre at the London School of Economics. Based on field work in Cuba since 1995, interviews with leaders, and day to day interaction with its people she has published several economic histories of Cuba from her first in-depth view of Che Guevara’s influence in the early years (Che Guevara: the Economics of Revolution (2009) to her recent work on Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the last couple of years she has co-produced two documentaries: Cuba & Covid-19: Public Health, Science and Solidarity (2020) and Tarea Vida (2021). Tarea Vida (Life Task) focuses on Cuba’s unique plan for climate change, adaptation, and mitigation. Tarea Vida premiered at the University of Glasgow as a collateral event to the Conference of the Parties (COP26).
