COM Dean’s Distinguished Lecture: Peter Agre, MD

You are invited to the Dean’s Distinguished Lecture at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Tuesday, Sept. 19. We are delighted that Peter Agre, MD, will speak on “Aquaporin Water Channels – From Atomic Structure to Clinical Medicine.”

Dr. Agre shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003 for discovering aquaporins, a family of water channel proteins found throughout nature and is responsible for numerous physiological processes in humans and is implicated in multiple clinical disorders. Agre is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and Medicine for which he chaired the Committee on Human Rights. From 2009-2011, Agre served as president and chair of the Board of Advisors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Agre joined the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine faculty in 1984 and rose to the rank of professor of biological chemistry and professor of medicine. Agre is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor and, since 2008, has been the director of the Malaria Research Institute at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The Dean’s Distinguished Lecture series highlights research topics that integrate efforts by multidisciplinary teams. Biomedical science research has become a “team sport” and requires a variety of subject matter and technical expertise, including cell biology, molecular biology, systems biology, immunology, multiomics, high-end imaging artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as clinical specialty expertise. The series hosts scientists who are leaders in important areas of contemporary scientific endeavors and who have made seminal contributions.
