Civic Cinema Double Feature: Teaching Environmental Justice in Chicago

Join us for our first Double Feature Civic Cinema to honor land and water defenders who have lost their lives in the fight for environmental and climate justice. Following the screening at Lecture Center B, environmental educators will discuss how they incorporate local and global environmental justice issues into their teaching.

“Berta Didn’t Die, She Multiplied” (30 minutes) honors Honduran environmental activist Berta Caceres. Caceres spent her life defending the many campesinos fighting for land justice, clean water and indigenous sovereignty in Honduras. She was killed in 2017 for her commitment to this work.

“Now you’re a terrorist: Atlanta’s Cop City crackdown” (25 minutes) focuses on the decentralized movement of environmental and social-justice activists in Atlanta, Georgia, who aim to stop the construction of “Cop City.” In 2023, Tortuguita, a 26-year-old Indigenous queer and non-binary environmental activist and community organizer, was shot and killed by Georgia state troopers for defending the Atlanta forest. 

Panelists are Briana Urena and Bee Rodriguez, Young Cultural Stewards of the Chicago Park District; and Luis Cabrales of the Ford Calumet Environmental Center, Big Marsh Park.
