The aroma of fresh breakfast burritos and hash browns greeted Chancellor Michael Amiridis when he showed up for his first “Headlines and Hash Browns” April 10 at Marie Robinson Hall on South Campus.
The event was organized by volunteers and Bill Kohler, lecturer in managerial communication who lives in Robinson Hall as part of the Faculty-in-Residence program.
Held in the fourth floor lounge every other Saturday, “Headlines and Hash Browns” promotes community within the residence hall and encourage students to read the news. About 45 residents attended Saturday’s event.
Part of the fun is the crossword puzzle, based on articles in the newspapers stacked around the room (Kohler offers The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, USA Today, Chicago papers and UIC News). The idea is that as students go through the papers looking up answers to the puzzle, they’ll see news that interests them.
“I’m amazed the chancellor would come visit us,” said Zach Piper, a Robinson Hall resident assistant. “He was a tonic to the residents of MRH.”
