A self-defense workshop will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the SPH-PI Activities Room. Taught by Wing Tsun Kwoon, it is sponsored by the Staff Concerns Subcommittee of the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women.

 

Info on grad schools

The 10th annual Chicago Graduate and Professional School Fair, 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the UIC Forum, offers information on more than 200 programs. Sponsored by the Office of Career Services, the free event is open to all. Students should bring their i-cards.

 

Stop the violence

Gary Slutkin, founder and executive director of Cure Violence, will talk about the group’s nationwide violence prevention work Oct. 22 in the inaugural Leeuwenhoek Lecture. He will speak from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the School of Public Health auditorium, 1603 W. Taylor St.

 

Ex-Bush staffer to speak

Pete Seat, former spokesman for President George W. Bush, will speak at noon today in Lecture Center F3 as part of the “Future of Chicago” lecture series.

A senior project manager at an Indianapolis-based public affairs firm, he is a syndicated columnist and author of the book The War on Millennials. Seat has appeared on many Fox News and MSNBC programs. He served on Bush’s White House staff from 2005 to 2009.

Grants for arts, sciences

A new campus grant program is aimed at arts, architecture and design, and humanities scholars. The grants are sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. Letters of intent are due Oct. 20; applications Nov. 5.

Pilot research grants are available through OVCR in the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, and the social sciences. Letters of intent are due Oct. 27.

 

Flu shots for state workers

Free flu shots will be offered Oct. 21 for eligible employees and annuitants enrolled in the Quality Care Health Plan or state-sponsored managed care plans.

Those not eligible include students, dependents, spouses, contractual workers, volunteers, consultants and part-time employees not enrolled in a group insurance plan.

Employees should bring their i-card and state-sponsored health insurance card. Annuitants must present their state-sponsored health insurance card and a state ID or driver’s license. Shots will be given from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Student Center East, and the Thompson Rooms, Student Center West.

The vaccinations are provided through a partnership that includes the College of Pharmacy, UIC Payroll and Benefits and the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.

 

Researchers of the year

Deadline is Nov. 7 for nominations for the UIC Researcher of the Year Awards. Ten $5,000 awards will be presented: five Distinguished Researcher awards for outstanding research achievements and five Rising Star awards to early career researchers.

Categories include the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, art and architecture.
