LONGER HOURS FOR SSB OFFICES

All offices in the Student Services Building will have extended hours this week.

Offices will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The building will be closed Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Day and return to regular hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 20.

 

PRIVATE SHOWING OF ‘SELMA’

A free screening of the new film “Selma” for UIC students, faculty and staff only will be offered Jan. 20 at the Showplace Icon Theater at the Roosevelt Collection, 1011 S. Delano Court East.

RSVP is required and a current i-card is required to be admitted. Vouchers for a free popcorn and beverage will be handed out while supplies last.

The film starts at 5 p.m.; doors open at 4 p.m. and no one will be admitted after 4:45 p.m.

The screening is sponsored by UIC Campus Programs.

MAD LAB

Friday is the deadline for the first round of applications to the Innovation Center’s MAD Lab for projects to improve health care.

The MAD Lab offers a team of faculty and graduate students to develop ideas into possible real-world solutions, from preliminary product design to potential for commercialization through university or external funding.

The MAD Lab provides expertise in engineering, business, medicine, industrial design and design research over eight to 10 weeks.

INTERCAMPUS MAIL REDUCED

Effective Feb. 1, the frequency of the intercampus mail shuttle between the

Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses will be reduced from five to three days per week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Need for the shuttle service has dropped significantly, campus officials say, and the reduction will save costs.

 

WE DON’T CLOSE WHEN IT SNOWS

As a matter of policy, the UIC campus never closes in extreme weather because residence halls, health care services and research facilities must remain open.

The campus will operate during regularly scheduled hours. Employees are expected to report to work or make arrangements with supervisors according to university regulations.

If individual instructors cancel class, they must notify college and departmental offices and inform students promptly by email or Blackboard. Work must be made up later in the semester.

All classes will be canceled if, in the judgment of the chancellor or provost, the health and safety of students, faculty and staff would be seriously jeopardized. Notification will be made via campus email and emergency text messaging, the UIC website and the UIC Information Line, 312-413-9696, as well as local news media.

University services such as mail delivery and transportation may be suspended.

The UI Hospital will remain open regardless of weather. Staff and students assigned to patient care and support are expected to report even when classes are canceled.

SNOW REMOVAL HOTLINE

During and after a winter storm, Facilities Management crews work around the clock to clear building entrances, streets, sidewalks and parking lots. Priority is always given to the hospital and clinics, disability-access entrances and parking spaces, emergency routes and public walkways.

Report problems related to snow and ice to the 24/7 snow removal hotline, 5-SNOW (312-355-7669). Provide location, time and a phone number or e-mail address for follow-up.

 

POLICY ON SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

A UIC Student Sexual Misconduct website was created in response to federal laws requiring universities to develop policies and provide education to the campus community.

The website is a comprehensive resource for students, faculty and staff. It includes campus policy and procedures, resources and education programs.

The website was created by the Student Response Team, which includes representatives from the UIC Police, Dean of Students, Access and Equity, University Counsel, Campus Advocacy Network, Counseling Center, Campus Housing, Wellness Center, International Services, Campus Programs, Campus Auxiliary Services and Public Affairs.

Information includes how to report an incident of sexual misconduct, how to get help for yourself or another person, what campus and community resources are available and information about student rights and confidentiality.

UNDERGRADS CAN WIN $5,000

Deadline is Jan. 30 for UIC undergraduates to enter the annual Maurice Prize Competition sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Students should undertake a project of their choice that addresses an issue, showing knowledge, creative use of resources and the ability to work with others to find solutions.

The winner — an individual or team — receives $5,000.

Information sessions about the competition will be held Friday, 1 to 2 p.m., and Jan. 20, 3 to 4 p.m., both in 226 Student Recreation Facility.
