JOIN THE PYRO PADDLERS

UIC’s dragon boat team, the Pyro Paddlers, is looking for new members —students, alumni, faculty and staff — to participate in the St. Charles Riverfest June 13 and Chicago Chinatown’s Dragon Boat Race for Literacy June 27.

In dragon boat racing, long boats with 20-person teams paddle in head-to-head competition.

Though paddling experience is not required, team members should be in good physical shape, with the endurance to paddle in sync with other team members.

In last year’s Chinatown race, the Pyro Paddlers finished seventh out of 30 teams.

Paddlers will be selected from two open practices, May 3 and May 16.

The team is supported by the Asian American Resource and Cultural Center and the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Asian Americans.

COPYRIGHT IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Learn more about a proposed update to copyright law, and how it could affect content users and creators, at Thursday’s presentation “The Future of Copyright: Opportunities, Challenges and the Status Quo.”

Sponsored by the University Library, the talk will be 3 to 5 p.m. in 1-470 Daley Library.

Donna Ferullo, director of the University Copyright Office at Purdue University, will discuss the effect of copyright law on social media users, authors, writers, musicians, scholars, researchers and anyone who uses the Internet.

Ferullo is the author of Managing Copyright in Higher Education. She has a law degree from Suffolk University Law School, a master’s of library science from the University of Maryland and a bachelor of arts in communications from Boston College. She is a member of the bar for Massachusetts and the U.S. Supreme Court.

BENEFITS OF CLOSET-CLEANING

Sorting through your closets for spring cleaning? Donate men’s and women’s business apparel and accessories in good condition to a clothing drive sponsored by the staff advocacy committee of the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women.

Donations will benefit Goldie’s Place, a nonprofit social service organization for people who are homeless.

Collection boxes are located in 104 College of Dentistry, first floor Disability, Health and Social Policy building, 1728 University Hall and 3343 Education, Theatre, Music and Social Work Building.

CULTURAL SHOWCASE

A cultural showcase April 13 will feature the performing talents of UIC students and raise money for the Pop-Up Pantry, a food pantry for students.

The Pop-Up Benefit: A Call to Action will include speakers on topics related to homelessness and food insecurity and performances by UIC students, including spoken word, music and dance.

There will also be a silent auction and student art showcase.

The cultural showcase will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Illinois Room, Student Center East. Cost is $5 students, $10 others; tickets are available at the UIC Bookstore.

IT PRO FORUM

April 10 is the deadline to register for the April 28 IT Pro Forum, a day of presentations, exhibits and networking opportunities for campus IT professionals.

This year’s theme, “Informational Technology’s Interchangeable Role in a High Tech World,” will showcase collaborative IT projects at UIC.

On-site registration will also be available.

STAND UP FOR  TRANSIT

The Urban Transportation Center and Office of Sustainability are leading a local effort to support Stand Up for Transportation, a national initiative to encourage use of public transit and help ensure funds are appropriated to repair and expand the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

On the morning of April 9, student volunteers will distribute fliers at CTA Blue and Pink line rapid transit stations that serve UIC. Members of the UIC community are invited to log their mode of travel April 9 to be entered into a contest to win prizes.

INTERNSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADS

Applications are due today for paid internships in various campus offices available for UIC undergraduates this summer through the Office of Sustainability.

Internships include research, fieldwork, project planning, project management and more.

Students in all majors who will be enrolled in undergraduate courses fall semester are eligible.  Positions are up to 15 hours a week, June 1 to Aug. 7.

Interns will also attend weekly seminars or field outings on topics such as energy, cultural sustainability, campus structure and administration and job readiness.
