POP-UP FOOD PANTRY: GIVING AND RECEIVING

The Pop-Up Food Pantry will be open Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 604A Student Center East. An i-card is required to receive donations.

The Pop-Up pantry, sponsored by the Wellness Center and Undergraduate Student Government, offers canned goods and non-perishable food items free to students in need.

Donations for the pantry can be dropped off at the Dean of Students Office, 3030 Student Services Building; the Undergraduate Student Success Center, 111 Stevenson Hall; African American Academic Network, 2800 Student Services Building, and the Wellness Center, 238 Student Center East.

Donations should be nonperishable items in cans, cartons or bags, in the original labeled container, within two weeks of “best used by dates. No glass containers are accepted.

Items most needed include canned fish, meat, soup, vegetables and beans; soup packets; cereal and granola bars, instant meals, rice and pasta, peanut butter and jelly, instant coffee, tea, powdered milk and baby food.

GET MOBILE

Driver’s license and state ID renewal, vehicle stickers, license plates, vehicle titles and the written driver’s exam are among the services available from the Secretary of State’s mobile office today on campus.

Services are offered from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the East Concourse of Student Center East.

THE LATEST WoRD

Next up for WoRD, UIC’s campus book group, is The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by civil rights attorney Michelle Alexander.

The group, open to all UIC employees and students, will meet to discuss the book at noon March 18, 507 Disability and Human Development Building, 1640 W. Roosevelt Road. The book is available at a 20 percent discount in the UIC Bookstores and from the UIC Library. For more information, contact Kris Zimmermann, kzimme3@uic.edu

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

Deadline is Feb. 20 to apply for awards from the Office of International Affairs to encourage international program development.

Six awards are available and all UIC academic units can apply. Proposals typically involve presentations or discussions with an international aspect, either in Chicago or abroad.

FREE DENTAL SCREENING

Free dental screenings are available Jan. 24 and Feb. 21 by dental students taking their licensing exam.

Screenings are 9 a.m. to noon at the College of Dentistry. Patients must be 18 years or older and have one form of ID and current list of medications. Patients who don’t speak English must bring an interpreter. Patients cannot be allergic to latex.

GREEN FOR GREEN

The first step for student proposals to help make UIC a greener campus are due Feb. 16 to the Sustainability Fee Advisory Board.

The Sustainability Fee, $3 per semester paid by all UIC students, funds small, short-term projects, helps subsidize larger, long-term projects, offers discounted Divvy memberships to students  and helps fund student travel to related conferences.

The advisory board includes students, faculty and staff. All UIC students and student organizations are eligible to apply.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline is Feb. 2 to apply for a new $1,000 scholarship for a UIC undergraduate, offered by the Social Justice Initiative.

The Nesbitt, Carrasco, Unzueta Border Crossing Scholarship will be offered to a UIC student who is engaged in activism that transcends borders and boundaries of identity, geography and disciplines.
