Former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert leads a panel discussion on poverty April 24.

“The Poverty Puzzle: Ending Poverty in America” takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in 605 Student Center East. A reception follows.

Herbert was an editorial columnist for the New York Times from 1993 to 2011, writing about politics, urban affairs and social trends. Other panelists include John Bouman, president of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law; Will Burns, alderman of Chicago’s 4th Ward; Sol Flores, founding executive director of La Casa Norte, a nonprofit serving homeless families; and Howard Tullman, CEO of 1871, an incubator for digital startups.

Seating is limited. The event is sponsored by the Great Cities Institute.

 

Renew driver’s license, plates today in SCE

Illinois residents can renew driver’s licenses and state IDs, update vehicle titles and registrations, take the written driver’s exam or purchase collegiate UIC license plates today at the mobile office of the Illinois secretary of state.

The services will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the concourse of Student Center East.

 

Live on FalconCam

Are UIC’s falcons getting ready to raise a new family this year on a University Hall ledge? According to viewings on UIC FalconCam, Mama Peregrine seems to be sitting on eggs.

Last spring, Nitz, a falcon who hails from Wisconsin, produced three eggs in her nest on the top floor of University Hall. Rosie, the peregrine falcon who made her home at UIC from 1999 to 2013, hatched 32 chicks on the ledge during her years nesting there.

 

The woman who runs O’Hare, Midway

Chicago aviation commissioner Rosemarie Andolino will speak at UIC Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Student Center East.

Andolino oversees the needs of about 85 million passengers and 55 airlines at O’Hare and Midway airports, as well as a $1 billion operating budget. The lecture is part of the College of Engineering’s Distinguished Lecture Series. Registration is required; email madelyn@uic.edu

 

Who’s Innovator of the Year?

UIC’s Innovator and Inventor of the Year will be announced at a reception April 30.

The cocktail reception and networking event begins at 5 p.m. in the East Terrace, Student Center East. The event will also celebrate the launching of a new initiative, Innovate@UIC, sponsored by the Office of Technology Management.

 

Chicago in Real Time

Through its Real Time Chicago lecture series, the Great Cities Institute urges metro Chicago residents to think regionally.

All discussions are free and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, lectures are at 2 p.m. at the Great Cities Institute, Suite 400, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs. Upcoming talks include:

• Friday: “I-90 Expansion Project”

• May 7: “Regional Economic Development Roundtable.”

 

Promotion and tenure, explained

The Office of Faculty Affairs will host the Promotion and Tenure Seminar series this spring.

The seminars are focused on pre-tenure faculty, but open to all members of the UIC community. They will explain the review process, policies and other professional development information. Seminars include:

• “Promotion and Tenure Seminar for Underrepresented Faculty,” 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, 603 Student Center East

• “Promotion and Tenure Seminar for Post Mid-Probation Pre-Tenure Faculty,” noon to 1 p.m. May 2, 401 University Hall.

Dan dissertation award

June 1 is the deadline to apply for the 13th annual Alice J. Dan Dissertation Research Award. The award encourages research about sex, gender and or women. UIC doctoral students who have an approved dissertation proposal can apply. Awards range from $500 to $1,000.

Thinking about retirement?

UIC will host a free retirement planning conference April 26.

The event, held in Student Center East, includes information on steps to complete before retirement, preparing for retirement, protecting benefits, financial planning and more. Presentations run from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required.

 

Electronic security fellowship

Applications are due May 1 for fellowships for doctoral candidates in electronic security and privacy. The UIC IGERT Program in Electronic Security and Privacy provides its fellows with $30,000 a year for two years, plus full tuition and fees.

 

Women in transportation

A lecture Thursday focuses on the role of women in the transportation industry.

Patricia Berry, a principal at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, will speak on ways women can play a bigger role in transportation. U.S. Department of Transportation statistics show that women hold only 13 percent of jobs in transportation. The event, sponsored by the Urban Transportation Center, takes place from noon to 1 p.m. in 418 CUPPA Hall.

 

Shuttle changes

The UIC Shuttle Service has made a change to the Intracampus and East Side shuttle service.

For the Intracampus Shuttle, Stop E, on the west side of Halsted Street, north of Roosevelt Road, will be relocated around the corner onto Roosevelt Road, about 125 feet west of Halsted Street. The East Side Shuttle will no longer stop at Stop E.

The changes were made in response to traffic and safety concerns for bicycle lanes along Halsted Street.
