The Morgan Street Bridge over the Eisenhower Expressway, which closed in September 2013 for the Byrne Interchange reconstruction project, reopened to pedestrian and vehicle traffic late Monday
Resurfacing and improvements to the entrance of nearby Parking Lot 9 should be completed by mid-October. Renovation of the CTA Blue Line station at Morgan Street, including an elevator for disability accessibility, is scheduled to be completed by the end of December.
The Peoria Street Bridge is also set for completion at the end of the year, weather permitting. Construction continues on the Halsted Street Bridge. The Halsted entrance to the CTA Blue Line station remains open.
Visualizing the future
Take a trip from the 16th century to the 21st at the daylong Frank Armitage Lecture Series Thursday, hosted by
the Biomedical Visualization Graduate Program.
The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends with a curated tour of the International Museum of Surgical Science at 7:45 p.m. The lectures are free; there is a charge for lunch and the museum tour.
Grants for arts, sciences
A new campus grant program is aimed at arts, architecture and design, and humanities scholars. The grants are sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.Letters of intent are due Oct. 20; applications Nov. 5.
Pilot research grants are available through OVCR in the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, and the social sciences. Letters of intent are due Oct. 27.
Researchers of the Year
Deadline is Nov. 7 for nominations for the UIC Researcher of the Year Awards. Ten $5,000 awards will be presented: five Distinguished Researcher awards for outstanding research achievements and five Rising Star awards to early career researchers. Categories include the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, art and architecture.
Need an intern?
The Office of Sustainability is seeking campus placements for its 2015 spring semester Sustainability Internship Program.
In the pilot program last summer, student interns were placed in seven departments where they worked on sustainability projects like recycling improvement, water waste reduction, marketing and event planning. For more information, visit or email eschmi21@uic.edu
Campus security report
UIC’s annual Security and Fire Safety Report, required of universities by federal law, is now available to the public.
The report includes statistics for 2011, 2012, and 2013 on reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings, property owned or controlled by UIC and public property within, immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The report also includes fire safety information, information on how to report a crime, a description of university police authority, crime notification procedures, emergency procedures, institutional policies related to campus security (alcohol and drug use, missing students and sexual assault), and crime prevention and safety information.
The report is available by request from the Office of the Dean of Students, 3030 Student Services Building.
Stop the violence
Gary Slutkin, founder and executive director of Cure Violence, will talk about the group’s nationwide violence prevention work Oct. 22 in the inaugural Leeuwenhoek Lecture. He will speak from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the School of Public Health auditorium, 1603 W. Taylor St.
