Chicago aviation commission speaks April 17

Chicago aviation commissioner Rosemarie Andolino will speak at UIC April 17 for the College of Engineering’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

Andolino oversees the needs of about 85 million passengers and 55 airlines at O’Hare and Midway airports, as well as a $1 billion operating budget. She is a leader in airport sustainability.

Andolino’s talk begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Student Center East. Registration is required; email madelyn@uic.edu

 

The birds are back!

Be on the lookout for falcon chicks hatching on a University Hall ledge – the falcon cam is now live.

UIC’s peregrine falcons have begun digging their nests.

Last spring, Nitz, a falcon who hails from Wisconsin, produced three eggs in her nest on the top floor of University Hall. Rosie, the peregrine falcon who made her home at UIC from 1999 to 2013, hatched 32 chicks on the ledge during her years nesting there.

 

Shuttle changes

The UIC Shuttle Service has made a change to the Intracampus and East Side shuttle services.

For the Intracampus Shuttle, Stop E on the west side of Halsted Street, north of Roosevelt Road, will be relocated around the corner to Roosevelt Road, about 125 feet west of Halsted Street. The East Side Shuttle will no longer stop at Stop E.

The changes were made in response to traffic and safety concerns for bicycle lanes along Halsted Street.

 

Father-son relationships

The value of positive relationships that black fathers hold with children and others is the focus of  a forum today.

“Relationship Matters: Black Dads, the Streets and the Justice System,” takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the UIC Forum. Participants will offer family strategies for black fathers, especially those involved in the justice system or affiliated with street life.

Speakers include Creasie Finney Hairston, dean of the Jane Addams College of Social Work, Joseph Strickland, senior researcher at UIC’s Jane Addams Center for Policy and Research, and Lori Crowder, executive director of the Alliance of Local Service Organizations and doctoral student in social work.

The free event is sponsored by the College of Social Work, the Alliance of Local Service Organizations and TASC Inc.

 

Campus dialogue

The Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement presents a campus dialogue on health care April 9. Students and employees can deliberate on the complex topic of health care policy at the event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 302 Student Center East. Lunch will be provided.

 

Spring cleaning

Recycle personally owned electronics at a collection event today. Items will be recycled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the West Concourse, Student Center East.

The recycling event is sponsored by Zeta Psi, the Academic Computing and Communications Center and the Office of Sustainability.

 

Journey to Capitol Hill

Rep. Luis Gutierrez will visit UIC Monday to read from his memoir, Still Dreaming: My Journey from the Barrio to Capitol Hill.

He will speak at 3:30 p.m. in the East Terrace, Student Center East.

The event is sponsored by the Union for Puerto Rican Students, in partnership with the Chancellor’s Lecture and Event Series. It is part of the Union for Puerto Rican Students’ 20th anniversary Pa’Lante Conference.

• “Political Prisoners and Human Rights in the Puerto Rican Context: the Case of Oscar López Rivera,” featuring human rights activist Lourdes Lugo and attorney Jan Susler, 8 to 9 a.m. Monday

Spotlight on research

A research forum Friday highlights the scholarly work of underrepresented students from Illinois.

The event, sponsored by the Illinois African American and Latino Higher Education Alliance, takes place from 11 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. in the Illinois Room, Student Center East.

 

Comedic struggles

Scott Dikkers, a founding editor of The Onion, discusses his early struggles in the comedy business April 11 on campus.

His presentation, “Leadership and Creative Risk” takes place from 11 a.m. to noon in 302 Student Center East.

World Health Day

UIC will host two events for World Health Day:

• Today: Fifth Annual World Health Day presentation, sponsored by the Center for Global Health. Speakers include Eli Adashi, former dean of medicine and biological sciences, Brown University, and John Wulu Jr., chief statistician, Department of Homeland Security. The event begins at noon in the Moss Auditorium, College of Medicine Research Building. Lunch will be served.

• Monday: The School of Public Health will host a screening of “Girl Rising,” a film that spotlights the stories of nine girls in the developing world who overcome the odds to achieve their dreams.

The screening starts at 11:30 a.m. and a panel discussion begins at noon in the School of Public Health auditorium. Panelists include Deniece Fields, executive director of Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago, Niamh King, vice president for programs, Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and K. Sujata, president/CEO, Chicago Foundation for Women.

Lunch will be served at 11:15 a.m.

The event is sponsored by the School of Public Health Global Health Initiative and the Maternal and Child Health Program.

Digital accessibility

A lecture Friday highlights the importance of complying with digital accessibility measures.

“Campus IT Accessibility: What Do Campuses Need to Comply?” takes place from 10 a.m. to noon, 1-470 Daley Library. The lecture will also be available on Blackboard Collaborate.

Jonathan Lazar, professor of computer and information sciences and director of undergraduate programs in information systems, Towson University, will speak.

IT collaborations

The IT Pro Forum, set for April 23, highlights collaborative IT efforts across campus.

“Partnering with Your Peers: Reach for the SummIT” is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the UIC Forum. Registration is due by 5 p.m. April 8.

 

Thinking about retirement?

UIC will host a free retirement planning conference April 26.

The event, held in Student Center East, includes information on steps to complete before retirement, preparing for retirement, protecting benefits, financial planning and more.

Presentations run from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required.

 

Electronic security fellowship

Applications are due May 1 for fellowships for doctoral candidates in electronic security and privacy. The UIC IGERT Program in Electronic Security and Privacy provides its fellows with $30,000 a year for two years, plus full tuition and fees.

 

Funding for inventions

UIC faculty inventors can apply for funding for their projects from the Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Proof of Concept Awards Program.

The program provides up to $75,000 for further development of UIC intellectual property that has been disclosed to the UIC Office of Technology Management. Pre-proposal applications are due to the Office of Technology Management by 5 p.m. Thursday.

 

Departmental honors

Applications are due April 11 for the 2014 Departmental Teaching Excellence Award.

The award recognizes group excellence and teaching. One award of $20,000 will be given to an academic unit that demonstrates outstanding collective commitment and performance in teaching.
