Stroll through the garden

The College of Pharmacy will host the 2014 Garden Walk and Lesniewicz Memorial Lecture Aug. 29 to celebrate the only urban medicinal plant garden in Chicago.

The event will feature tours of the Dorothy Bradley Atkins Medicinal Plant Garden from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Memory Elvin-Lewis, biology professor at Washington University, presents a keynote lecture, “Understanding Traditional Healing Plants of Tropical Rainforests in Northern South America,” from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 32 Pharmacy.

The Dorothy Bradley Atkins Medicinal Plant Garden contains more than 200 species of medicinal plants, including black cohosh, purple coneflower and floxglove, whose chemical compounds are used in clinical practice around the world.

 

Catching clinics

UIC head softball coach Michelle Venturella will hold an 11-week catcher’s clinic for young athletes Sept. 2 through Nov. 11.

The clinic is open to players ages 8 to 18 and takes place from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays at Flames Field. Each session focuses on the elements of catching, from blocking and throwing to framing and calling a game.

Alumni awards

Nominate outstanding UIC grads for the 2015 Alumni Awards program through Aug. 31. 

Each October, the Alumni Association honors outstanding UIC graduates with the Alumni Achievement, Distinguished Service and Humanitarian awards. Other awards are presented throughout the year.

Networking at Grant Park

Applied Health Sciences alumni, students, faculty and staff are invited to a networking event Sept. 12.

AHS at Chicago SummerDance takes place from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Grant Park Spirit of Music Garden, 601 S. Michigan Avenue.

The event includes a talk by David Marquez, associate professor of kinesiology, on the health benefits of dance, as well as basic Latin dance instruction and live music.

Run for a good cause

Sign up to run the Chicago Marathon and raise money for diabetes research with UIC’s Cellmates on the Run team.

The team, organized by José Oberholzer, chief of transplantation surgery, raises money for the Chicago Diabetes Project. Last year’s marathon team raised about $200,000 for diabetes research.

The 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, a 26.2-mile race through 26 Chicago neighborhoods, is scheduled for Oct. 12.

 

Benefit for student athletes

UIC Athletics hosts the 21^st annual Scholarship Classic Aug. 28, benefitting student athlete scholarships.

The event takes place at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, 2001 Rodeo Drive.

Cost is $6,600 for three foursomes (12 people), $2,500 per foursome, $650 for a single golfer, $400 for selected hole signage, and $125 for dinner and drinks only. A portion of every ticket is tax deductible.

Registration, breakfast and a putting contest begin at 9 a.m., with golfing starting at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served on the course during the round, followed by a cocktail hour, hors d’oeuvres and dinner. A silent auction will take place after dinner.

Science and alcoholism

The director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism presents a seminar on campus Aug. 18.

George Koob will discuss “What Science Can Contribute to the Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of Alcoholism” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Moss Auditorium, College of Medicine Research Building. For more information, call 312-569-7418.

 

See the campus

UIC will host its second annual Open House Sept. 13 to welcome prospective students, their parents and members of the public to campus. The event, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., features an information fair, campus tours, activities, demonstrations and opportunities to explore student life and housing.

Colleges, departments and units can participate in the Open House Exhibit Hall. Academic units can offer programming for the event. More than 5,000 visitors attended last year’s open house.

 

Urban neighborhoods

The 2014 Urban Forum will spotlight “The Return of the Neighborhood as an Urban Strategy.”

The event, which takes place Sept. 18 at the UIC Forum, examines the complexities of metropolitan regions. Co-chairs for the forum include UIC Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Susana Vasquez, executive director, LISC/Chicago. For more information, call 312-413-2194.

 

Looking for a lunch spot?

Employees who have parking assignments can park for free on South Campus during the lunchtime hours.

Employees can use their valid UIC standard parking assignment to park for free at the Maxwell Street Parking garage for free from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 

Support for researchers

Investigators can apply for support from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s Bridge Funding program.

The program provides short-term financial support to sustain research programs and laboratories during funding gaps. The awards are given to investigators with established projects that have a high probability of continued support from extramural sources.
