Uphold the Constitution

UIC celebrates National Constitution Day Tuesday, noon to 1:30 p.m., with a voter registration drive and lecture by DePaul University law professor emeritus Mahmoud Cherif Bassiouni.

Bassiouni will present “Guantanamo, Torture, and the Constitution” at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Services Building.

Information about internships and volunteer opportunities will be available.

 

Job analysis update

An update on the process of converting academic professional jobs to civil service positions will be sponsored by the Academic Professional Advisory Committee Sept. 26.

The presentation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Molecular Biology Research Building’s Herman Auditorium.

Speakers will include Maureen Park, executive director and associate vice president of human resources, Robert Crouch, associate vice president for human resources, and Ron Puskarits, director of compensation in human resources.

Presenters will address questions submitted through the registration form and a Q&A session following the presentation.

 

Going green

From recycling shoes to transforming parks, UIC’s Office of Sustainability will explore ways to build a more green community during this month’s Sustainability Days.

Events include a transportation fair, climate change talk, green building tours and more.

 

Humanities talks

UIC’s Institute for the Humanities hosts two lectures this month.

All talks take place in the Institute for the Humanities, lower level, Stevenson Hall.

• Sept. 18, noon: “The Diminutive Homologue to the Penis,” Sarah Rodriguez, medical humanities and bioethics, Northwestern University

• Sept. 26, 4 p.m.: “Visual Cultural Studies,” Clark Hulse, professor emeritus of English and art history, and Peter Erickson, theater and African American studies, Northwestern University.

Give blood

UIC is now partnering with LifeSource for its campus blood drives.

LifeSource personnel will staff all campus drives, and students and employees can schedule their blood donation appointments online. Donors should fill out a health history questionnaire on the day of the blood drive.

Muslims for Life will sponsor a Patriot Day Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Center East atrium.

Health issues for minorities

“Bridging the Gap: Emerging Health Issues in Underrepresented Minorities” will presented by UIC’s Department of Surgery Friday at the UIC Forum.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White will be guest speaker, and six medical professionals will also speak.

 

Humanitarian food aid

Ertharin Cousin, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, will speak Oct. 11 on “Delivering Food Assistance in a Shrinking Humanitarian Space.”

The UIC alumna will talk at 2 p.m. in 302 Student Center East.

Cousin was executive vice president and COO of Feeding America (then called America’s Second Harvest) and led its response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She was head of government communications and community affairs at Albertson’s Foods and president of Albertson’s Foundation.

The lecture is part of the 2013-2014 Chancellor’s Initiative in the Humanities on food studies at UIC.

 

Tech-assisted learning

The TechTeach@UIC Conference, set for Oct. 9, will showcase successes, challenges and opportunities in technology-assisted teaching and learning.

Curious about using iPads in classrooms? About setting up an online or blended course? About MOOCs?

APAC News is out

The latest issue of APAC News, published by the Academic Professional Advisory Committee, is available online. 

Articles include “Moody’s Downgrades Universities’ Bond Ratings” and profiles of academic professional staff members.

 

Grants to get going

Deadline is Sept. 21 to submit letters of intent for research awards of $20,000 from the 2013 Campus Research Board Pilot grant program.

The awards help investigators develop preliminary data or other materials necessary for research projects in the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering and the social sciences.

The 2013 competition is for tenure-track and tenured faculty.

Oct. 15 is the deadline for full applications.

 

Undergrad Research Award

Applications from faculty and students are being accepted for the 2013-2014 Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards, which will fund more than 100 undergraduate students to work as research assistants in faculty labs.

Students must be eligible for Federal Work Study to participate.

Faculty members who hire a student also registered for research credit will receive a Faculty Research Mentor Award of $300 per student per semester to support any scholarly expenses.

 

 

UIC Open House

UIC will welcome prospective students, families, friends, alumni and community members at UIC Open House, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5.

Visitors will drop in at various venues to learn about undergraduate majors and programs, explore student life and housing, find out about financial aid and tour the campus.

 

Faculty research awards

Research awards of $20,000 are available through the 2013 Campus Research Board pilot grant program.

The support helps investigators develop preliminary data or other materials necessary for research projects in the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering and the social sciences.

Last year’s competition was targeted to nontenure track and tenure-track junior faculty; the 2013 competition is for tenure track and tenured faculty only.

Deadline for letters of intent is Sept. 21. Deadline for full application is Oct. 15.
