Harilyn Rousso, a “founding mother” of the U.S. disabled women’s movement, will speak April 19 on her experiences in overcoming prejudice about disability.

Rousso, author of Don’t Call Me Inspirational: A Disabled Feminist Talks Back, has been involved in the disability rights and women’s movement for more than 25 years.

Her talk, from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Disability, Health and Social Policy Building auditorium, is sponsored by the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women, UIC Disability Resource Center and the department of disability and human development.

Supporting student research

June 1 is deadline to apply for the 12th annual Alice J. Dan Dissertation Research Award and Clinical Translational Research Award.

The award encourages research about gender and/or women. UIC doctoral students who have an approved dissertation proposal can apply.

Awards range from $500 to $1,000. Winners will be announced in July.

Students can learn more about careers in the public sector at a forum Friday.

“A Day of Information and Dialogue about Careers in the Public Sector” takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Illinois Room, Student Center East.

Keynote speakers are John Nay, diplomat-in-residence from the U.S. Department of State, and Ra Joy, executive director of Arts Alliance Illinois.

The forum will include a morning public service panel and speed networking session. The afternoon session will include a student roundtable.

The forum is sponsored by the department of public administration and the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement.

Honoring Mother Earth

UIC celebrates Earth Month in April with bike workshops and the popular Great Stuff Exchange and EcoJamapalooza.

Register your bike with UIC Police and learn about safety, maintenance and protection at workshops held at different locations on campus.

The Great Stuff Exchange, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in Student Center East, is a chance to give away unwanted office and school supplies you don’t need and take items you do.

EcoJamapalooza, UIC’s annual student-run Earth Day celebration held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 in the Lecture Center Plaza, offers free music, food and information from student groups and local organizations.

The event, held in Student Center East, includes information on steps to complete before retirement, preparing for retirement, protecting benefits, financial planning and more.

Presentations run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

More time to study

During the last week of instruction and finals week, the Daley Library will be open around the clock from 10 a.m. April 28 through 7 p.m. May 10.

The Library of the Health Sciences will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight April 19, 9 a.m. to midnight April 20 and continuously from 8 a.m. April 21 until midnight May 6.

 

Examining health disparities

M. Roy Wilson of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities will explain “Why Health Disparities Matter” 4 p.m. today in the College of Medicine Research Building’s Moss Auditorium for the Chancellor’s Lecture Series.

Wilson is the institute’s deputy director for strategic scientific planning and program coordination.

 

Igniting research

Letters of intent are due Friday for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research’s Ignite Award.

The award will help researchers kick start their planning process. Eligible sponsored programs include research training, instrumentation and facilities opportunities.

Grants of as much as $20,000 are available for a six-month, nonrenewable award.

 

Benefit payout


UIC employees can defer vacation and compensable sick leave payouts to their 403(b) and/or 457 retirement accounts when they retire or leave the university.
