Food for thought


Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser will give the keynote address April 4 at “Food Justice: Interdisciplinary Perspectives,” sponsored by the Institute for the Humanities and the Chancellor’s Initiative in the Humanities.

Schlosser, an investigative journalist and author, will speak at 5 p.m. in the Illinois Room, Student Center East.

Urban agriculturists Laurell Sims and Seneca Kern will discuss local solutions to issues of food production and consumption at the conference’s kickoff event, “Think Global/Garden Local,” presented earlier that day by the UIC Global Learning Community.

Sims, production and marketing manager for Growing Power Chicago, and Kern, co-founder of WeFarm America, will speak at noon in 613 Student Center East. Food will be served. RSVP to glc@las.uic.edu.

Calling student artists

Students can make their mark on the Stevenson Hall oasis, an informal learning space to study or relax before class.

Current UIC students can submit artwork for a design contest. The winning concept will be featured in Stevenson Hall this fall on the glass wall between the oasis and the entry vestibule.

Making work possible

Labor leader Ai-jen Poo will talk about organizing domestic workers across the country during a conversation Thursday at the Hull-House Museum.

Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, presents “The Work That Makes All Work Possible: Building a Domestic Worker Bill of Rights Movement” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the museum. RSVP required to hullhousersvp@gmail.com.

This event is part of a yearlong series of interactive public workshops, performances and conversations associated with “Unfinished Business: 21st Century Home Economics,” an exhibition at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.

Interested in journalism?

UIC News seeks two interns for fall semester.

Applicants should have experience in writing for publications (online or print) and an interest in journalism. Video and photography skills are a plus. Interns must enroll in an internship course for elective credit.

Lobby day

UIC students and employees will join others from the Urbana-Champaign and Springfield campuses at the state capitol April 10 for an annual excursion to lobby Illinois lawmakers for state funding.

University of Illinois Advocacy Day at the Capitol 2013 is sponsored by Illinois Connection at the University of Illinois Alumni Association.

Buses will leave UIC in the morning; participants will have a lunch briefing in Springfield before meeting legislators in the afternoon. Buses will transport participants back to campus after a reception and debriefing.

Employees must take a vacation day to participate. Registration online.

UIC will host a free retirement planning conference April 20.

The event, held in Student Center East, includes information on steps to complete before retirement, preparing for retirement, protecting benefits, financial planning and more.

Presentations run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
