Campbell newest member of Flames’ 1,000-Point Club

Ruvanna Campbell became the 20th member of UIC’s 1,000-Point Club Wednesday against Detroit.

Campbell grabbed 11 rebounds for her 10th consecutive double-digit performance. It wasn’t enough to seal the deal, though — The Flames (14-9, 4-6 HL) dropped the 76-68 home contest to Detroit (9-13, 4-5 HL).

“Detroit did a good job of moving the ball tonight and made their open shots,” said UIC head coach Regina Miller. “We shot the ball better in the second half but our defense allowed too many open looks. Wright State is the highest scoring team in the Horizon League and our defensive intensity must improve before Saturday.”

UIC dominated inside as the Flames outrebounded the Titans 39-33, scored 40 points in the paint and tallied 12 second-chance points. The Flames grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and limited the Titans to six offensive caroms.

Terri Bender scored a game-high 23 points for her fifth 20-point effort of the season and the first since Dec. 14 at Eastern Illinois. She was 9-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Bender dished out five assists and picked up three steals. She has scored in double-figures in 13 straight games and recorded three steals in three consecutive contests.

Melita Emanuel-Carr was 3-of-6 from three-point land and finished with 15 points. She has scored in double-figures on 12 occasions this season. Emanuel-Carr grabbed seven rebounds.

Kendyl Nunn earned her first start of the season and scored 12 points for her seventh double-digit effort. She had two of UIC’s nine steals on defense.

UIC jumped out to an 8-4 lead before Detroit used a 13-2 run to hold a 17-10 advantage with 13:05 left in the first half. The Flames responded with an 11-3 run and Emanuel-Carr’s last-second three-pointer tied the score at 30-30 going into the locker room.

Down 37-34 in the second half, UIC used an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the contest at 42-37 with 15:15 on the clock. Emanuel-Carr’s layup with 7:56 remaining gave the Flames their final lead of the game (59-56) as UDM responded with a 10-0 run. The Titans scored 20 out of the final 29 points of the contest and held their largest lead at 73-63 with 1:04 on the clock.
