UIC Experts

Violence a Health Epidemic: Solving the complex problem of violence will require a multifaceted approach, including reformation of the nation’s mental health system, says Paul Schewe, director of UIC’s Interdisciplinary Center for Research on Violence. Schewe says children’s exposure to violence, which impacts cognitive and physical development, needs to be treated as a public health epidemic similar to polio and other childhood diseases. Chantix Concerns: People who take Chantix to help them quit smoking could be at an increased risk for cardiovascular problems, and doctors should weigh the benefits before prescribing, according to a review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Lori Wilken, UIC clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu

Healing Hepatitis C: Less than 20 percent of the 4 million Americans infected with the hepatitis C begin the recommended treatment regimen, and less than 5 percent are successfully treated, despite the availability of effective drugs, according to a new study. Juliana Chan, UIC clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice, can comment. Contact Sam Hostettler, (312) 355-2522; samhos@uic.edu
