Bringing back old memories
After classes on Friday, I got a chance to go back to high school. I went to North Lawndale College Prep to watch their sophomore and varsity basketball teams play Whitney Young, which has become an inner-city rivalry between the two schools. My godbrother (Rayon Brown, 1) is a freshman at North Lawndale and I finally got a chance to see him in action. He is the starting point guard for the sophomore team and also plays with the varsity team. If I had to compare him to a NBA player, I would say he’s a mixture of Rajon Rondo from the Dallas Mavericks and Chris Paul, who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. He’s got the big hands and flashy passes like Rondo but he scores points and hits free throws efficiently, much like Chris Paul.
The games started at 4:30 p.m., beginning with the sophomores, and I was impressed by what I saw. First, the school records the games! They had a camera at each end of the court, filming the game. I thought that was pretty cool because it made me feel as if I was watching a real NBA game; I didn’t have that at my high school (Steinmetz College Prep). I’m sure the players and coaches appreciate the cameras so that they can watch the film and see things that the team can improve on. I also saw student reporters who would pull people from the crowd to comment on the game. I was hoping they picked me.
I felt like such a part of their school that I began to chant with the school: “RED! RED! RED!” North Lawndale students shout that during the game when their team is on defense and the guest team is trying to score. Then after the game, reality kicked in and I remembered I had to write this blog.
Matthew Maggit is a sophomore in accounting in the College of Business Administration. Matthew decided to come to UIC because of the business program’s reputation and because he wanted to study at a campus with a diverse atmosphere. He likes how close the campus is to downtown Chicago and the Willis Tower. In his free time, he loves to surround myself with loved ones, and he enjoys sports and going to the gym.
