A commuter’s perspective

Traveling to and from the campus can become a stressful task during the academic semester. Having classes in the morning will require commuters to get up earlier in the morning to give themselves enough time to get to classes on time. You will also need to leave the campus earlier than other students because you have to travel home. There are benefits to living on or around campus; those who live on campus get a little more sleep.

I have to commute from the South Side. I get up at 7 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to make it to my math class at 9 a.m.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days that I get to enjoy my bed longer. I don’t have to be at class until 11 a.m. To get to school, I take a bus and two trains. I sure am happy that the university provides us with a Ventra card because I save a lot of money during the semester.

The negatives about being a commuter is the possibility that public transportation is running behind schedule. I recommend giving yourself an extra 15-20 minutes to get to school so that if the bus is arriving late or the train has been delayed, then you won’t be rushing. My average time to get to school is about an hour and 15 minutes. Some positives about being a commuter is the amount of money that you can save from not living on campus. Also, the other positive of being a commuter is that like me, I love going home to a hot cooked dinner and the company of your family. I think I would become homesick if I stayed away from my family for too long.

Matthew Maggit is a sophomore in accounting in the College of Business Administration. Matthew decided to come to UIC because of the business program’s reputation and because  he wanted to study at a campus with a diverse atmosphere. He likes how close the campus is downtown Chicago and the Willis Tower. In his free time, he loves to surround myself with loved ones, and he enjoys sports and going to the gym.
