DELICIOUS DIVERSITY

Some of UIC’s 75 cultural student organizations will offer their own taste of home at the Taste of UIC today, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the East Terrace of Student Center East.

The event is a fund-raiser for the student groups. Admission is free but prices vary; tickets to buy food are sold at the door.

Items on the menu could include horchata, elotes, spam musubi, falafel and warak dawali.

Students can earn a $5 food credit for Taste of UIC if they’re among the first 25 to attend Tasty Talks, a discussion on food, culture and community, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. today in 613 Student Center East.

 

GOOD ADVICE, FREE

Two successful tech alumni will share “10 Things I Wish I Knew as a Student” at a session Thursday 4 p.m., sponsored by the Women in Science & Engineering Program.

Laura Munteanu (2009 civil engineering), senior design engineer at EN Engineering, and Joseph Fuentes (1982 applied math/computer science), who has worked for IBM, AT&T Bell Labs, Nortel Networks, 3Com and U.S. Robotics, will also share internship and job opportunities.

PINK OUT FITNESS

Campus Recreation promotes breast cancer awareness with special events today, Thursday and Friday.

Today’s activities at the Student Recreation Facility include free pink wrist bands, rock climbing 4 to 9 p.m., Zumba 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. and cycling 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. The winner of a pink duck race in the natatorium at 6 p.m. gets a free massage.

A free “Fight and Kick Out Breast Cancer” TurboKick class will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Sport and Fitness Center.

A “Stomp Out Breast Cancer” step and flex class begins at 5 p.m. in the Student Recreation Facility.

Activities are free to students and members; daily entrance rates apply to nonmembers.

WATCH RUGBY, GET HEALTHY

Free health screenings will be offered Monday near campus during the USA Rugby Men’s Eagles practice.

Watch the team practice from 3 to 5 p.m. at Quest Multisport, 2641 W. Harrison St. Free health screenings for high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, body fat and more will be available from 3 to 7 p.m.  Men can also get a blood test to screen for prostate cancer. Bilingual healthcare professionals will be available.

Health screenings are also available at the Soldier Field Fan Zone from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. before the team’s Nov. 1 match versus New Zealand. Tickets are not needed to visit the Fan Zone.

The screenings are sponsored by Astellas Pharma US, the Men’s Health Network and USA Rugby.

 

HONORARY DEGREES

UIC faculty, staff and students are invited to submit nominations for an honorary degree to be given at 2015 commencement.

An honorary degree may be awarded for extraordinary contributions to the scholarly or professional world, public service, or UIC achievements and ideals. Some relationship with UIC is desirable but not required.

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION CEREMONY

Winners of this year’s campus employee awards will be honored at the 2014 Employee Recognition Awards Ceremony and Reception, 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 in the UIC Forum.

All UIC community members are invited.

The event honors winners of the Award of Merit, CAPE Award, INSPIRE and Luminary Awards, Woman of the Year, Janice Watkins Award and UI Health Class Act and Academy Award. Employees marking 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years of service will also be recognized.

Parking relocation will be honored in Lot 5 for drivers with a current campus parking permit.

PROMOTION & TENURE COMMITTEE

Online voting continues through 1 p.m. Friday for faculty representatives to the campus Promotion and Tenure Committee.

The committee includes 18 professors on indefinite appointment at 100 percent time, elected by tenured and tenure-track faculty. They serve three-year terms.

Each college and school has one representative, except the colleges of Medicine and Liberal Arts and Sciences, which have three each. The provost may appoint up to nine additional members.

RESEARCHERS OF THE YEAR

Deadline is Nov. 7 for nominations for the UIC Researcher of the Year Awards. Ten $5,000 awards will be presented: five Distinguished Researcher awards for outstanding research achievements and five Rising Star awards to early career researchers.

Categories include the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities, art and architecture.

 

FEED THE WORLD

Author, academic and activist Raj Patel will present “Cook, Eat, Man, Woman — Competing Ideas to Feed the World in the 21st Century” at 4 p.m. Nov. 13 in the Illinois Room, Student Center East.

Patel became an outspoken critic of the World Bank, World Trade Organization and the United Nations after working at those organizations.

He is the author of Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System and The Value of Nothing: How to Reshape Market Society and Redefine Democracy.

Patel is research professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, University of Texas, Austin, and a fellow at the Institute for Food and Development Policy/Food First.

His lecture is part of the Chancellor’s 2014-2015 Initiative in the Humanities focusing on food studies at UIC.
