UIC offers summer music, drama camps for teens
Add some drama — or music — to your teen’s summer with three arts camps for high school students starting next week on campus.
UIC offers sessions in symphonic band, jazz band and theatre, taught by professors and arts professionals. Financial aid is available.
Symphonic Band Camp
July 28-Aug. 2
Monday-Saturday, 4-8 p.m.
Students can expand their repertoire through intensive rehearsal in wind band and instrumental master classes. The session ends with a concert performance.
The camp is directed by José Riojas, director of UIC Bands and an arranger, transcriber and composer who has received commissions from four continents. He conducts the UIC Wind Ensemble and oversees the UIC University Band and UIC Pep Band, as well as saxophone ensembles at Wildacres, a cultural retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
Cost: $245, including coursework, materials, lunch and recreational activities. Students who register for Symphonic Band Camp along with Theatre or Jazz Camp pay $620, a $100 discount.
Jazz Camp
July 14-25
Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Students play in small combos, learning instrument technique, theory, jazz history, improvisation and listening skills. The camp is directed by Andy Baker, UIC Jazz Ensemble director, with demonstrations and performances by local jazz musicians.
Cost: $475, including coursework, materials, lunch and recreational activities.
Theatre Camp
July 14-25
Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
Students work with artists from Lookingglass Theatre Company to create an original work. Workshops and master classes in voice, movement and costume design taught by UIC School of Theatre and Music faculty. The camp is directed by Jason Martin, UIC faculty member and local actor and dialect coach.
Cost: $475, including coursework, materials, lunch and recreational activities.
