Meter Deal: Chicago’s soon-to-be audited parking meter deal is the “poster child” for the city’s failed privatization strategy, says Evan McKenzie, UIC associate professor of political science. McKenzie says the city’s insolvency is due to “tax-phobic methods” such as TIFs and other tax breaks, borrowing, and selling/leasing income-producing public assets for short-term cash.
