Explore. Learn. Play.

Those are the core themes of the upcoming UIC Open House, which will bring prospective students, families, friends, alumni and community members to campus Oct. 5.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., guests can explore UIC facilities and dorms through guided tours, experience UIC’s academic programs during faculty-led lectures and demonstrations, and visit the quad for a festive atmosphere featuring music, games, student organizations and UIC spirit.

The UIC Expo, based in UIC Forum, will serve as the visitor check-in. It features one-on-one sessions with staff and faculty representatives from over 70 UIC colleges, programs and support services.

Information on how to navigate the UIC application process and finance college will be provided during admissions and financial aid sessions led by UIC insiders.

A showcase for academic programs will include interactive sessions such as a tour of UIC’s Electronic Visualization Lab and the College Liberal Arts and Sciences’ student-for-a-day class.

Visitors can learn how to save the world from the School of Public Health, discover how to manage blood pressure in stressful environments with the College of Nursing or map their own ward with the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.

Lectures, demonstrations and activities will be presented by, but not limited to, representatives and faculty from business, education, honors, humanities and two cultural centers.

The Lecture Center Plaza has been dubbed the “Play Zone,” where UIC Radio and campus/local bands will supply music and diverse dance performances from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Student organization leaders will provide information about campus clubs.

Other activities include the Army ROTC’s physical challenge and massages from Campus Recreation.

The Office of Admissions will issue “passports” to guide visitors through the open house schedule, with stickers given out for attending different events. Guests who collect more than six stickers are eligible for a special UIC giveaway, while supplies last.

In addition to two UIC dining facilities, some off-campus merchants are offering discounts for visitors.

Registration is recommended for prospective students, but not required for others.
