When public health crises strike, vulnerable populations — the homeless, the poor and other underserved groups — may suffer the greatest impact. Dr. Stockton Mayer, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine, works closely with these populations to provide basic health education and services that reduce the risk of disease and suffering. In Chicago, through the mobile unit Comprehensive Care program, he delivers primary medical care bundled with syringe exchange services to patients who inject drugs. In Guatemala, he works with collaborators to sustain HIV care in settings with limited resources.
Mayer co-leads the UIC Outbreak Response Team, a program that works with the Chicago Department of Public Health and other local universities to deploy community-based testing and vaccination services to vulnerable groups in the city.
Mayer can offer expertise in the following areas:
- Vulnerable patient populations
- Providing healthcare in low-resource settings
- Infectious disease
- Epidemics
- Injection drug use
- Community-based solutions
