Damiano Rondelli
Michael Reese Professor of Hematology; Division Chief of Hematology/Oncology
Biography
Dr. Damiano Rondelli is the Michael Reese Professor of Hematology in the College of Medicine and division chief of hematology/oncology. He is also the director of the blood and marrow transplant program. Rondelli is the director of global partnerships in the College of Medicine’s Center for Global Health.
Rondelli’s research focuses on clinical trials in allogeneic stem cell transplantation for blood cancer and for sickle cell anemia patients, and on building capacity in stem cell transplantation worldwide.
In 2012, he started a GlobalBMT project to collaborate with low- and middle-income countries with a high need for bone marrow transplants. His GlobalBMT initiative currently includes partners in Nepal, India, Nigeria, Bolivia, Ukraine and Cuba.
He was the recipient of the American Society of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy 2022 Public Service Award, in 2023 he received an honorary degree from the Universidad Major San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia, and received the 2024 Global Humanitarian Award of the Institute of Medicine in Chicago.
