Biography
Dr. Craig Niederberger is a board-certified urologist at UI Health and Clarence C. Saelhof professor and head of the Department of Urology in the College of Medicine. He also holds a joint appointment as professor in the Department of Bioengineering in the College of Engineering.
Dr. Niederberger is a leading expert in urology and male health, including male fertility and the aging male. His expertise is andrology, a medical subspecialty focused on male health and reproduction. He also presents and publishes research on the intersection of technology and medicine, specifically focusing on data science and the application of artificial intelligence in medicine.
At UIC, Dr. Niederberger also leads the multidisciplinary Urology Lab (UR* Lab), a research and development center in UIC’s Innovation Center, that brings together practicing urologists and faculty from industrial design, business, and engineering to guide urology residents and fellows through a year-long experiential learning healthcare innovation project. Under Dr. Niederberger’s leadership, residents and fellows learn how to conduct design research, perform market analysis and IP evaluation, develop rapid prototypes, and validate their concepts through benchtop and user testing.
Dr. Niederberger is a primary editor of the fourth and fifth editions of Infertility in the Male and earlier in his career, he was co-editor in chief of Fertility and Sterility and a section editor for the Journal of Urology.
He served as general program chair for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s annual meeting in 2009 and has served as president of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction within the American Urological Association and as president of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology within the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
