Carol Ferrans has studied quality-of-life and disparities in health care for more than 25 years, developing culturally specific measures for African Americans, Hispanic Americans and other ethnic groups.
She is known for the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index, used throughout the world and translated into 21 languages.
Ferrans has received more than $56 million in funding since her first research grant in 1984, from such organizations as the National Cancer Institute, National Institute for Nursing Research and the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities.
