Dr. Brian Layden is professor and chief of the division of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism in the UIC College of Medicine, and is the chief of the Diabetes Center & Endocrinology Clinic at UI Health. He is a clinician-scientist who studies the relationship between diabetes and obesity.

His lab focuses on uncovering metabolic pathways that contribute to obesity and diabetes and identifying small molecules or drugs that can be used to target those pathways to prevent and treat disease. Some of his current research examines the contribution of the gut microbiome to diabetes and obesity and how it may be “repaired” as part of treatment for these diseases.

Layden is an expert in providing care to people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including those with advanced diabetes and/or insulin resistance and patients with pre-diabetes, where the disease can still be prevented. He also treats patients with obesity linked to genetic traits that impact metabolism.
