Join the Center for Clinical and Translational Science for an online seminar on mental health interventions for Latinx people, called By the Community, For the Community: Community-Engaged Research with Latinx Communities to Improve Well-Being.
Description:
Latinxs, who make up 19% of the U.S. population and over half of the population growth during the last decade, are experiencing a mental health crisis. For Latinx immigrant families, stress caused by structural racism (discriminatory policies, practices, stereotypes and norms that fuel inequities) can drive immigration fears, discrimination and linguistic isolation, further deepening mental health disparities among this community.
Current mental health interventions do not address the diverse sociocultural stressors caused by structural racism nor work with communities to develop relevant, sustainable interventions. This seminar will discuss the development of a multilevel, family-based intervention for Latinx immigrant families called FIESTA (Familias Inmigrantes Empoderandose contra Estres Tomando Acction) in collaboration with a team of community health workers (promotores). Drawing on our nearly three-year partnership with The Resurrection Project, we will highlight best practices for working with communities, the process of developing FIESTA and future steps in our collaboration.
Speakers:
Stephanie Torres, PhD; Assistant Professor, Department of Educational Psychology; Affiliate Faculty, Community and Applied Developmental Psychology (CADP), Department of Psychology; Affiliate Faculty, Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science, Department of Medicine
Promotores from The Resurrection Project: Celsa Arroyo, Ofelia Carmona, Consuelo Martinez, Maria Ochoa and Alma Sigala
