Dr. Mary Lou Schmidt is a professor of pediatrics and division chief of pediatric hematology/oncology in UIC’s College of Medicine. Her clinical expertise is in the care of infants, children, adolescents and young adult patients with cancer, including leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumor, sarcoma, retinoblastoma and neuroblastoma. Schmidt also has a clinical expertise in hematology and in benign tumors, including hemangiomas, vascular malformations, histiocytosis and tumors related to conditions such as neurofibromatosis. She provides pediatric palliative care and often consults on challenging ethical issues related to young patients.

Schmidt is the principal investigator for the tri-institutional Children’s Oncology Group Clinical Trials Program at UIC, Rush University and John H. Stroger Medical Centers.
