Kathryn Chval is the dean of the College of Education and professor of mathematics education at the University of Illinois Chicago.

It’s time to imagine what’s possible and recognize the central role that education plays in every home and community in Chicago. 

Kathryn Chval is the dean of the College of Education and professor of mathematics education at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Chval has a breath of expertise, range of experiences, and commitment to building understanding and solutions related to education. Her work spans innovative developments, policy, research, and administration at the national, state and local levels.  Throughout her 34-year career in higher education, Chval has demonstrated leadership to enhance teaching; academic programs; curriculum; student experience and success; diversity, inclusion and justice; the culture of organizations; and global engagement.

In her role as dean of the College of Education, she facilitates conditions and collaborations that enhance the Chicago educational community and inspires the college’s values of hope, engagement and justice. Her research focuses on effective preparation models and supports structures for mathematics teachers, effective elementary mathematics teaching for multilingual learners, and curriculum standards and policies.
