Biography
Julie Dowling researches Latino communities and racialization, particularly the state‘s role in shaping race and ideology.
In her book, “Mexican Americans and the Question of Race,” she examines how Mexican Americans respond to the U.S. Census race question, revealing disparities between federal definitions of race and regional interpretations.
Dowling has served on the National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations at the U.S. Census Bureau, advocating for marginalized groups. She is working on a project that explores, through interviews and surveys, perceptions of government among different racial groups in Illinois and California.
