Frank Weinberg
Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Thoracic Oncology Disease Team Lead, Division of Hematology and Oncology
Biography
Dr. Frank Weinberg is a thoracic oncologist at UI Health and a physician-scientist at the University of Illinois Cancer Center who specializes in lung cancer care, early detection and translational research. His work bridges laboratory discovery and community-based clinical care, with a focus on improving outcomes for patients at high risk for lung cancer, particularly in underserved urban populations.
Weinberg leads initiatives in lung cancer screening, biomarker development and implementation science. He studies how artificial intelligence, metabolic biomarkers and social determinants of health can be integrated to refine early detection and personalize treatment strategies. His research explores how inflammatory and immunometabolic pathways influence lung cancer development and therapeutic response.
In clinical practice, Weinberg treats patients with both non-small cell and small cell lung cancer, with expertise in targeted therapies, immunotherapy, antibody-drug conjugates and emerging treatment approaches. He also leads efforts to expand equitable access to clinical trials, studying systemic and patient-level factors that influence enrollment in diverse populations. At UI Health, his work has demonstrated high clinical trial enrollment rates within an urban safety-net setting, highlighting the importance of trust, trial availability and structural access in improving representation in cancer research. In addition, he studies how health systems can improve timely access to supportive and palliative care for patients with advanced disease.
Weinberg frequently speaks on lung cancer prevention, screening policy, emerging therapeutics, cancer health disparities and the intersection of AI and oncology. He is experienced in discussing complex scientific topics in accessible language for broad audiences across print, digital, radio and television media.
