The Broad Street AI: Navigating Equity, Ethics and Artificial Intelligence in Public Health
Speaker:
Craig M. Klugman, PhD, Vincent de Paul Professor of Bioethics and Health Humanities at DePaul University

Description: In the 2020 Brazilian limited series “Omniscient,” a disease- and violence- free society is maintained by an AI that monitors individuals’ biometrics, blood chemistry and physical symptoms. If the individual poses a threat to the public, their autonomy is overridden and they are isolated. Artificial intelligence is quickly changing the health are landscape in the United States. With abilities for advanced surveillance, automated resource allocation and rapid data analysis, AI holds hope for improving the public’s health. However, those benefits arrive alongside serious ethical concerns such as data bias, privacy, ownership, environmental costs, human agency, accountability and control. Exploring both the promise and the peril, this talk will show the need for ethical and policy guidelines that ensure a human is always in the loop.
