“The Borders of America: Authoritarianism, Border Regimes and Migrant Resistance”

To mark the launch of “The Borders of America” (Duke University Press, 2026), co-edited by Soledad Álvarez Velasco, Nicholas DeGenova, Gustavo Dias and Eduardo Domenech, this two-panel event will examine continuities and recent transformations in mobility, border regimes and migrant struggles across the Americas. Bringing together faculty and researchers from UIC and other universities in Chicago, elsewhere in the United States, and Latin America, it will foster a critical, comparative discussion of developments across South, Central, and North America. This hemispheric perspective will illuminate how an extreme-right regional turn is intensifying migrant dispossession, border externalization and border enforcement — and how these processes are being contested through transnational resistance.
