Sword, Submarine and Spacecraft: Translating Science Fiction and Fantasy Into and Out of Chinese

Date / Time

April 1, 2026

12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

This talk presented by the Department of Linguistics traces the evolution of three iconic images in speculative fiction — the sword (fantasy), the submarine (early technological sci-fi) and the spacecraft (cosmic modern sci-fi) — through the translation of Western works into Chinese and the global circulation of Chinese speculative writing.

The speaker will be Jamie Lin, a literary translator and freelance writer.
