We’re excited to welcome Sky Cubacub of Rebirth Garments for a virtual talk. They’ll speak about their manifesto Radical Visibility: a queer and disabled dress reform movement — a project of centering Disabled Queer joy and exploring practices that “nurture a community of people who have often been excluded from mainstream fashion and provide a platform for people to confidently express pride in the intersections of their identities.”
Sky’s talk is a public meeting of a one-credit think-tank course called “Making Inclusive Theatre: RICHARD III as Disability Art.” This course supports a collaboration between the UIC Disability Cultural Center, the Department of Theatre, Bodies of Work, and Babes with Blades Theatre Company (BWBTC), as BWBTC puts on a production of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” (scheduled for Fall 2022). Our inquiry is focused on the questions: “What does it mean to do inclusive, disability-culture informed theater? How might a performance speak and even make an argument?” This work is supported by a UIC Creative Activity Award.
Image Description: Bold periwinkle text on a white background and white text on a deep teal square, with a photo of Sky Cubacub reading a copy of the Radical Visibility Zine (photo credit: @ColectivoMultipolar). Sky is standing against a purple background, and is wearing a cropped top, hot pink draped bottom, large hot pink earrings, and a chainmaille headdress and one chainmaille fingerless glove. A cobalt blue band of makeup crosses their face over their eyes, and hot pink lipstick creates an asymmetrical lip shape.
