Dr. Hershow has been at University of Illinois at Chicago since 1987. At UIC School of Public Health, he teaches courses on infectious disease epidemiology and terrorism as a public health issue. He has engaged in epidemiologic research on human immunodeficiency virus in women, hepatitis C virus infection and hospital-acquired infections. Specific areas of focus include investigation of viral coinfections and other cofactors that may influence HIV disease progression, the early natural history of hepatitis C virus infection, prevention of infectious disease morbidity in substance users and the epidemiology of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in hospitals.
Hershow’s expertise extends to emerging infectious diseases. Most recently, he has focused his research and service on COVID-19 infection. He developed and oversaw the UIC COVID-19 Contact Tracing and Epidemiology Program to monitor and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the UIC campus. In addition, he has partnered with the Chicago Department of Public Health to evaluate Chicago’s COVID-19 contact-tracing efforts and worked on other studies that address COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. He is currently collaborating with the Illinois Department of Public Health to develop workforce training programs to combat COVID-19 in Illinois long-term-care facilities. Recently, he developed another training program that aimed to help health department personnel, the general public, first responders, medical providers and K-12 school personnel prepare for future health crises.
Public Health Unpacked is a weekly lecture series showcasing the insights, vision and research of public health leaders from the UIC School of Public Health and beyond.
Please note: Lunch will not be provided. We encourage attendees to bring their lunch and enjoy while listening to the lecture.
