Civic Engagement Lunch Talk with Phillip A. Boda

Date / Time

February 12, 2025

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join Assistant Professor Phillip A. Boda and the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement at the institute’s Civic Engagement Lunch Talk Series.

An overwhelming number of Black and brown poor communities are disproportionately over-burdened by U.S. environmental hazards. Thus, we need to identify the most vulnerable populations when creating environmental-justice policies. Boda and his team focused their research on toxin release inventories, population density and median income, leveraging simulation visualizations in their environmental-justice tool.

The design features of these simulations illustrate Chicagoans’ sense-making as the primary driver of development across the three design iterations Boda’s team conducted. Boda argues that to expand knowledge around environmental-justice maps and envision community engagement beyond what we want them to know, we need to honor the voices from the communities justly.

Lunch boxes will be available. Please RSVP to share dietary restrictions.
